Surla was bummed that she didn’t think to ask Jax whether or not he was still in her science class. She didn’t like the anticipation of wondering. Her English class had to go to the library to check out a new book to read as an assignment. She didn’t know she would soon have the chance to ask him.

Surla had to get a library card made, since she was a new student. The teacher had her go to the front desk, while the rest of the students picked chairs at several tables to sit and quietly read their texts.

A round woman with large glasses sat at the counter next to her computer. She noticed Surla and stood up. Whispering, she said, “How can I help you, dear?”

“Hi, I need a library card.”

“Oh, no problem. I’ll be right back. I am training a student and I want them to be able to learn this.” She giggled.

She went to a back room and when she came back out Jax was following her. Surprised, Surla said hello a little too loud. The librarian shushed her, and then introduced the young man with striking features.

“Yes, we know each other,” Jax said with the corner of his mouth turned up in a half smile.

“What are you doing working here?”

“I am a T.A.,” he said. “You know, Teacher’s Assistant.”

“Since when?”

“Since today.”

“Yes, but you snuck in at Jefferson High’s library and were expelled.”

“How did you know that?”

“Shhh.” The woman put a finger to her lips. Surla turned and noticed some students looking up from their reading.

“Jax has volunteered to help Washington High’s library. He felt he needed to repay for his past choices somehow. You know, like community service after breaking a law.” The woman pushed up on her glasses, bringing attention to her smiling eyes. “I am proud of Jax. He has helped me so much today.”

Surla raised her eyebrows at the comments, and Jax looked down at the floor.

“I learn from my mistakes,” Jax said. “It was a stupid mistake.”

“The same with the frogs?” Surla pushed. She was surprised she was speaking so forcefully after having such an enjoyable evening the night before.

“Um…” Jax bit his lip. “Y-yes, the same with the frogs. Stupid.”

The woman inserted, “Now that is what I like to hear from a young man. He acknowledges his mistakes. He is not going to make any more major mistakes this year, I know.”

“Uh, do you want me to take your picture now?” Jax changed the subject.

“Yes, but give me a moment to fix my hair.” Surla looked at her reflection in a window. She licked the back of a hand and then wiped it against flyaway strands. She then returned to the desk, next to the camera.

Jax was smiling big.

“What?” Surla asked.

“Nothing.” He chuckled under his breath.

The librarian finished showing him what button to press and how to save and print. “Okay…” He turned on the camera. “You can’t look directly at the camera. Look above it, okay?”

“Or else what?”

“Or else you will look creepy, like a deer in headlights.
